What Not to Wear!

Just for fun, I am offering up a fashion throwback for the blog today. Let’s take a look at what use to be the women of America’s “go to outfit” for practicing Hatha yoga.

Itumblr_lxahwkqKOF1qzer3so1_500 think that Jane Fonda was a pretty big influence here. Although these ladies may have been rockin’ it, I am sure that the belt and the turtleneck were a bit restrictive. That could be the issue for the woman in the foreground here

No need to include a photo of the 1980’s. Just imagine these same outfits in extreme neon colors. Oh, and don’t forget the terry cloth headbands.

Luckily, today we have the infamous “yoga pants”. According to Google, “Chemists Wallace Carothers, William Hanford, Donald Holmes and Joseph C. Shivers invented the provocative blend of Lycra, polyester and spandex that defines today’s yoga pants.” Personally, I prefer the cotton variety.  Their comfort cannot be matched, and, no belt need be included!

I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes I wear them for other things like running errands. Unfortunately, there are those that believe yoga pants should be banned in public. Amanda Hallay, professor of fashion and cultural history at New York City’s LIM College, states, “Yoga pants are a step above pajamas and we don’t wear pajamas out to lunch, and we certainly don’t wear them to work. Pajamas are for sleeping in, and ergo, not appropriate to wear in any other setting. The same can be said for yoga pants. Yoga pants are to be worn while doing yoga.”

Haven’t your heard? Yoga pants are the new jean.
